Family support advises on many differing issues, the majority of our work is emotional support, information and advice, particularly at early diagnosis. We advise and provide information regarding medical terminology helping parents to understand their child's eye condition, emotionally - providing parents with a listening ear and helping them to talk through their worries and concerns - practical, support regarding how to work though different issues relating to their child's development and life skills and also we are able to advise in areas relating to benefits etc., and empowering parents to work through their concerns.
Our education service supports parents through the education process - advising and supporting with regard to the child with a visual impairment, accessing the National curriculum.
Our CustomEyes books service provides large print books tailored to suit the child's individual visual needs, we have a catalogue of over 1,500 titles including national curriculum revision guides.
The Recreational Activities are a programme of days out / family weekends where families and children can meet members of our team to discuss any issues or concerns and also benefit from meeting other families who have a child with a visual impairment, reducing for some, a sense of isolation.
IT support and information, works with children visually impaired, providing when required IT assessments, advice on appropriate equipment and supporting with regard to communication aids.
We have a number of publications, Tom's Day at the Eye Hospital, Direction Point - which provide parents with information and access to additional support (shortly to be web based). We also have a number of information sheets relating to different areas of visual impairment, a number of these can be found on our website. www.nbcs.org.uk
