Under the Budget Control Act of 2011, federal programs face an across-the-board funding cut of nearly 8 percent in January 2013 if Congress hasn't reached agreement on a budget deficit reduction plan. A report issued recently by Senator Tom Harkin details projected state-by-state impacts of these automatic spending cuts, known as "sequestration". NORD and its advocacy partners will be monitoring this situation after Congress returns from its summer recess to determine the potential impact on rare disease research and orphan product development, and what the response of the rare disease community should be. Open enrollment will begin in October 2013 for health insurance through the Marketplace (Exchanges) established by the Affordable Care Act. It's important to learn about the various options because they may offer more affordable alternatives for many families. Financial assistance programs will be included in the Marketplace.
