I am having an LPS revision next Tuesday april/08/2014.
My wife and I are trying to get an approximate time that patients stayed in the hospital after surgery as the Dr. did not offer a time. Cost is not the issue as I am an disabled veteran and it is being done at the CAVHS in Little Rock, Arkansas. My first shunt was placed in 1992 and hospital time was long, hoping things have changed. This will be a programmable LPS. Also any truth to the no iPad issue; iPad3 no magnetic cover.

I had a lp shunt installed in November 2011.  I was in the hospital less than a whole morning!  The pre op took longer!!  I was in the car (sister driving) on my way home (275 miles) later in the morning.  I even drove the following day (had to take my sister to the local airport).  I took it easy until the stitches came out (they give you a limit as to how much weight is OK to lift), took a few pain pills, but I found it was not a big deal.  Others have been in bed after the surgery.  I guess it depends on just how good your surgeon is and how well the surgery goes.  I have three incision scars, each about 2 inches long but all healed without an issue.  I do have a high tolerance for pain, too.  My surgery was done at Duke University Hospital.  I have had adjustments to my shunt's programmable valve, but no other problems. I hope you have the same good outcome.

Hi Robert! Unfortunately, it's not anything we can predict. If everything goes well, you should notice an immediate change and be discharged within a couple days. It's also usually a 4-6 week recovery, but you can have restrictions up to 6 months or a year. It all really depends on how the surgery goes and your response to it. Sorry we can't be more specific!

Other members have mentioned issues with different laptops, tablets, etc. I would check with your neurosurgeon regarding limitations for the specific valve/equipment they're using.

Thank You, praying all goes well. I am off my blood thinner now and am ready though a little scared because of this and my age. First failed many years ago and has been treated with symptom relief, primarily fentanyl and I am tired of it. I really hope this is the last and problems are few. Will post sometime after Tuesday. Hi wylee, they blamed mine on multiple TBI incidents.

I know it's not always helpful, but staying positive and focusing on a good outcome does seem to help. Hospitals in this area are even providing meditation/guided imagery tools for pre and post surgery. It's still a little strange for me, but I used it with my last surgery and it was amazing! I was nervous but didn't have the anxiety, and recovery was a breeze. You could check with your hospital or PM me, if you're interested. I'll either help you find a copy or send you a copy of the one I used. I honestly just turned it on before bed and slept through it every night.

Well received a call from my neurosurgeon today, he was making sure I understood the dangers of subdural hematoma as I am also taking Xarelto for DVT and there is a black box warning. I let him know I do know of the dangers and that quality of life and vision are more important to me and my wife than mobility, Debbie and I have talked it over and this is our decision. I have stopped taking Xarelto today as he wanted 5 days without, surgery is still Tuesday.

Remember our soldiers and pray for them. Combat takes its toll on both physical and mental health, something I know all to well.
