I am very frustrated and in pain. Unfortunately,I lost my health insurance a year ago,so I am now in a state program, that is substandard. For the past 5 months,I have been dealing with terrible, abdominal pain. They have done CT scans,GYN test,Digestive test, and all negative, including bloodwork. I can't work, have gained weight from inactivity, and have nothing to relieve the pain. I had a shunt series a year ago,and the neurosurgeon told me he doesn't even think I really had[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] IIH. (but he put the shunt in) what the heck...He told me,after the shunt has been in so long(10 years) it would be dangerous to take it out. I honestly feel,as if the pain is from the shunt, hitting nerves. I have also been so extremely tired, memory problems, dizzy, etc. I am so desperate to find an answer. Don't think I can stand this pain much longer, and seems they aren't taken me seriously. I need advice!

Susan, it does sound as though your shunt has failed, and you need to been seen in order to get back on track. Being without medical insurance is a rough situation, which can add even more stress to your life. Please make an appointment with the gp you see through your state program, explain (bring copies of the guides found here on this website) what IIH is, what your old and new symptoms are, and your need to get put into the system. You will need to see an Ophthalmologist as well as Neurologist and Neurosurgeon.
The sooner you can get the process started, the better.

My advice is to find a different neurosurgeon. I'm not sure where you live, but most places have treatment options or advocacy services. It's highly unlikely they gave you a shunt without cause..probably just trying to save face. No one wants to admit they made a mistake or their treatment choice isn't working. If you're having symptoms, there's obviously a problem..no one knows your body better than you, so don't give up until you find someone that hears you!

There's a resource for talking with your physician about IIH in the Useful Guides & Print Out section..take a look at it before your next appointment and maybe you'll get some ideas. I'd also keep a symptom log.. maybe include meds & food to help narrow things down. Hopefully the doctors will find something useful!

Take care & keep us posted,
Julie
