LP Shunt and IBS

I've had issues w/ IBS since my LP Shunt was implanted in 2002. A physician recently told me that my digestive issues could stem from the shunt draining fluid into my abdominal cavity. That really doesn't make sense to me, so I wondered if anyone else has had similar issues. I've tried everything from probiotics to removing processed carbs/sugar from my diet, and nothing seems to help..any suggestions?

Thank goodness I'm not the only one!! Yes I too have IBS but I was told it was caused by the scarring the shunt surgery caused in my abdomen. Apparently, people who have had lots of operations, or bands of internal scar tissue are more likely to get IBS, because the scarring causes adhesions that could cause an organ to attach to the wall of the abdomens cavity.

I have probiotic yoghurts and have also cut out a lot of dairy stuff, which seems to help quite a bit. I've also limited my fibre.

Thank goodness..not that you're suffering too, but I was beginning to think I was crazy! The scar tissue makes more sense to me than the fluid. My primary care physician just recommended a fiber supplement, but I have to admit I'm a little afraid of it. I do not react well to natural fiber, so everything they suggest seems to make it worse. Dairy is definitely next on my list of things to reduce, but I'm not sure what will be left to eat?! I am just constantly amazed at how many systems are affected by this disease..there has to be some sort of balance, right??
