chat Hi Jean, yes I suffer terribly at that time of the month, but I have got to say if you have the Mirena coil fitted it helps quite a lot. It only releases hormones into your your womb etc, here's the link that tells you more about it Mirena Coil I noticed a big difference when I had mine. The only reason I don't have it now is because it was taken out after my last shunt infection, and I am waiting to see if I could have Hydrotherm Ablation done instead. As, because of having poly-cystic ovary syndrome my menstruation is very heavy and every 2 weeks.

I must add, it was my Neurosurgeon who referred me to have the Mirena coil after I had my first shunt, because it was that, that had made my symptoms so bad, that it made my IIH worse, hence the need for a shunt.

If your cycle is heavy and you notice your pressure is up, it might be worth discussing with your doctor.

If you have the contraceptive implant and it's not working for you, I can't see how they can refuse to take it out, they can't make you keep it! Take someone with you when you go to family planning, and tell them that as the implant is causing you more problems and affecting your IIH, you would rather have it taken out and replaced with the Mirena coil, if that is your choice.

You can't be forced to keep the implant if you don't want it Jean. Let me know how you get on.

My pressure goes up during my period and for a couple of day right in the middle between them. Now that I've started into the change I'm actually using hp headaches as a hint that I might be starting.

I've tried meditation, and it does help in some cases, but not when it comes to noise intolerance I'm afraid. On another post on the Tinnitus forum, we have suggested earplugs as a help with noise, and they do help. You can get ones that filter out noise but still allow you to hear things, like the ones musicians for example. Smile

Meditation has helped when I have headaches that are moderately painful, or when I have felt stressed and even preparing for surgery or a procedure.
Just by being in a quiet place and deep breathing and relaxation is a big help.

As for the earplugs they are so small now that they are virtually unnoticeable. Check out the link to them Earplugs

HI all i have not been on for a while as since my last period 8 weeks ago i have been really bad and guess what they will not remove the implant so i have put a big complaint in about it as its my body i should be able to say if i want it or not, I have been researching the mirena coil and i am thinking of getting that if i ever get the implant out. Suppose they have to take it out when it runs out in a year.

Hi Jean hug, you'll notice a big difference with the mirena coil, I thought it was fantastic and it sorted out my period really well. You do have the right which contraceptive you want to have. Has this been done at the family planning clinic or gynaecology at the hospital?

I know this is an old post, but since I'm currently having my period, and feeling like crap, I thought I would add to the discussion!

I add ibuprofen to my pain meds, but, I've noticed that it gives me severe medicine head. My oxycodone alone doesn't, but wow, ibuprofen just wipes me out!

Also, if you want to meditate, and your ears bother you, try a white noise machine. I bought one so I could get to sleep at night, and it really does help. :0

Yes I get worse headaches around my period as well. I was meaning to tell my neurologist about it and I forgot the last time I was there. It's is interesting to know that I am not the only one!

PostSubject: Re: A Question for the ladies   A Question for the ladies I_icon_minitimeWed Apr 06, 2011 6:34 pm

Well I'm finally getting something done to rid myself off the headaches and things, when I hit my periods, which at the moment are every 2 weeks. I've had problems with them from the get go, which the pill sorted out for me, but because of the IIH, was taken off, so they went back to being awful. t doesn't help that I have PCO's. anyway I had the Mirena coil, which was fantastic!!! They took it out after the last shunt infection as a precaution, and they've been awful again. I had to wait a year before I could have it replaced, but then because I had, had no infections, even though I knew it wasn't the coil, I decided to play safe.

They just got worse so last November I went for an ultrasound, which showed nothing, but did turn up kidney cancer, So although all clear now after surgery to remove half my left kidney with the tumour, it turns out I can't have the Mirena coil, or the progesterone only pills, because of the cancer.

So that being said I've been to see my Gynaecologist, and have discussed having an endometrial ablation done, which basically permanently removes the lining in your womb. As I'm 42, already have a daughter of 22, and sufficient health issues to deal with, I know it's the right choice for me.

Apparently it takes 90 seconds, is done as an outpatient, which after over 20 surgeries practically one after the other, suits me fine, and is not as drastic as a hysterectomy. As my IIH is linked to my hormones, who knows what effects the menopause will have, so I didn't want it prematurely.

I've got to have a hysteroscopy first, sort of like a womb audition, where they insert a camera to see if my womb is suitable for the ablation. I'm having it in June, so I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

I have to admit, I'm so glad that finally it's getting sorted, and then I should only be affected by the weather, rather than periods every month, which make me extrememly ill.

I was told by my ob to get Mirena, then told by my nuero to not have any contraceptive with hormones. It conteracts the Diamox, and other things with IIh. I only have two cycles a year for over ten years, diagnosed 3 of them. Has anyone else noticed marked difference in cycle- i.e. twice a year?

Yes my cycel is actually twice a month. My Neurosurgeon referred me for the Mirena coil which only releases hormones in the womb and not any where else, so it is actually better for us to have. I don't klnow why he thinks you can't have it, as lots of IH'ers do have the Mirena coil. It is fantastic and I had no problems with it whatsoever, and it made a big difference.

At the moment I'm waiting to have an edometrial ablation as I can't have the Mirena coil anymore, because I had cancer last year.

I've never been told when having the Mirena coil by any of my Neuro's or surgeon that it interfered with the Diamox, and so I'd definitely get a second opinion on that.

I just never used contraceptives. I'm 35 with two children. Im not sure if my period has an effect, because sometimes symptoms are worse just before my period, and at other times its after my period. Sometimes twice a month and at other times skip a month.
