Hi all,

It has been awhile since I posted anything. On Jan 8, 2013 I had a VP shunt placed. The surgery went well but about 6 hours afterwards I had two seizures and was moved to the ICU and placed on a vent. I have never had seizures before so needless to say this is an adjustment. I have had one seizure since being home and will be seeing my neurologist on Wed to discuss the treatment plan. I am on seizure medicine and I am not adjusting well to it.

I was wondering if any one else had a similar experience after shunt surgery?

The good news is that I have not had a headache or the noise in my ears since the surgery! That is a blessing!

Thanks,

Tara

Hi Tara, I'm glad to hear that at least the IIH symptoms have improved! I had seizures after my lumbar shunt placement and was on the trauma ward for 5 days before finally being released. They decided it was a result of losing too much CSF too quickly, so they laid me flat and gave me 2 IV's of a caffeine solution. I was bouncing off the walls and didn't sleep for a couple days, but felt much better once I came down from the caffeine buzz and got a good nights rest. I know the VP shunt is a completely different procedure with it's own risks and side effects, but it really was the scariest thing I've ever experienced and I complete understand your concerns. I'm glad they're closely monitoring your condition..hopefully, they'll be able to figure it out soon! Make sure you write down all of your symptoms, side effects, and concerns for your appointment..let us know how it goes!!!

Hi Tara
I myself have small seizure type episodes, although they are more like uncontrollable tremors and shakes. I was told by my Neurosurgeon that it was possibly caused by the surgeries. I do have medication that controls them.

Hey Tara, thanks for the update.

I hope the docs are able to figure out what is causing your seizures quickly. You are finally feeling better from the IIH symptoms, you certainly don't need any new ones

Hi Tara! Smile Thanks for checking in, and glad to hear that the shunt has helped to improve management of your IIH symptoms. I don't have a shunt myself and haven't had seizures, so I don't have any experience I can share. Just hoping it all gets straightened out for you soon, hun! *hugs*
