PostSubject: Sammyjo update on shunt surgery   Sammyjo update on shunt surgery I_icon_minitimeFri Dec 07, 2012 7:00 am

so i went to hospital (A&E) as i had double vision and very bad swooshy ears. (as u all know i have had iih for 10yrs) any way i was transfereed to queens medical 2 hours away from where i live i got told the the damage to my optic neve is perminat and i will need a permaant hearing aid AHHH but was put on emergency list for shunt surgry.

did MRI and my ventricles r still too narrow for VP shunt so LP shunt it is. the surgery list is extensive so they did LP to take some of the strain off but didn't take all of the fluid off as they have to leave some on for the surgery.

so on the 12th i go back to hospital for MRI to check on the ventricles. on the 13th i get my op weather it be VP or LP.

i am no longer affraid of the surgery when i think of the damage that has been done, losing 75% vision in one of my eyes and 80% of my hearing all and all. i just hate think how much more damage could be done so i am just thinking " weather the shunt blocks of leaks or what ever that has got to be less risk to my seances "

Sammy thank you so much for the update, it's such a relief to know that you are going to be shunted before any more damage is done. Hopefully there is a chance that you may get some or all of the lost vision back with the shunt, so my fingers will be crossed for you, that that happens.
I'm glad you're not afraid of the surgery and are accepting that it is a necessary means to get you back on the right track and a decent quality of life. If you have any questions about the shunt surgery, ask away, we're only too glad to answer them.

thank you so much for posting Sammy, I was worried when you stopped and we didn't know what was happening. I am so sorry to hear about your vision and hearing but maybe some of that will come back after the shunt. it sounds like you are on the fast track now (whatever that means) and they will take care of you. please continue to keep us updated.

they did say the shunt may recover some of my vision but as for my hearing i may need a gromit not 100% what that is but hay ho x

I do have one question though is there anything i should have at home ready for after the surgery (when they let me out) to help the recovery or make it easier at least x

I hope so!!
I was up and about in just two days after my lp surgery. Your stitches should be out before then and all restrictions removed (but then again you guys do things a bit differently on your side of the pond ;) )

i hope i bounce back like you did.... i am getting a bit scared now as it less than 48hrs away.... i am beginning to second guess my self keep thinking "is it worth the risk of those low pressure head aches people seem to suffer with after LP shunt"

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] just getting slightly terrified, not of the surgery but after the surgery, gonna go on a nice walk with my beautiful dogs to calm my self.

Just breathe!!! State of mind makes a huge difference, so try to stay relaxed and positive..just picture yourself healthy and happy with a working shunt. Focus on all the things you'll be able to do, places you'll be able to go, etc. I'll send you lots of healing thoughts!

Sammy, I'm so glad you're feeling better!!! Just keep moving your arms and legs to release that gas pressure..I look like a crazy person after surgery because I'm flailing about, but it helps A LOT! I hope you find continued relief..
