Does anyone else feel sometimes as the headaches' coming on its from there being to much going on around you, environmental stress, or being over-stimulated? I notice the headaches I get in the afternoon as oppose to other times of the day seem to make me want to dig a hole in the dirt and stick my head into it ( lol ) noises, activity, chaos ( kids getting home from school ) seem to set me off daily ( on days that a severe headache isn't already present ) If so, what can be done to try to lessen the blow?

Yes, it is definitely a factor! I worked with a sleep medicine physician to reduce the stimulation in my house..it's always a work in progress, but start with colors and clutter. I can at least go to my bedroom and completely decompress if needed..no electronics, allergens, etc. Meditation, guided imagery, or rest 30 mins before a gathering, outing, seige of children also helps..you can reduce pain and set some boundaries to protect yourself.

It's a little more difficult with children, since they frown on cages these days..LOL. I would suggest starting with the environment..no tv, music, or unnecessary noise; reduce lighting; allow yourself time to rest and prepare. I worked with children/parents in their homes for several years. They were overwhelmed for different reasons, but the principles are the same..you want to be able to share with and support your children, while taking care of yourself. We encouraged a strict routine and it would vary depending on age. Older kids would come home, grab a snack, and head to their rooms..alternating time with Mom, Dad, or whoever. Younger kids come home and go to designated area..kitchen for snacks, dining room table for activity (homework, coloring, arts/crafts, etc). This allowed parents time to find out about their day and spend quality time, but keep environment under control..usually 20-30mins, just enough time to decompress so it's not quite so chaotic. At that point work into regular routine..play in designated area, tv time, homework, chores, etc..while you take 5 mins to breathe, rest, whatever and start dinner prep. It can be a difficult adjustment, but very worth it in the end. If you don't have the strength or energy, then I'd suggest starting with the environment and taking care of yourself.

I hope you find something useful in all that..let me know if you have specific ideas and I'll do my best to help you set up a routine, reward chart, or whatever will help.

Good luck!!!

hi Pam;
this is my biggest issue. Julie those are some good ideas about managing the environment. I am just so unable to maintain that structure when I feel so awful and self protective. yes, I get increased symptoms from smells, sounds and any type of stimulation, like emotional stimulation and environmental chaos. I feel the best when I am alone and it is quiet. it is very sad as I have become so isolated. I tell people, yes, you DO have to tiptoe around me, so sorry, because if you upset me I will get sick. I will completely "crash" if people get me upset; I'll end up on the floor unable to stand or walk. nightly I get behind on my schedule to get my kids to bed because I will procrastinate and stay in my room on my computer because it is quiet. but I guess I do take breaks and try to manage the stimulation exposure. the worst things are smells and sounds though. I find that wearing earplugs or noise cancelling headphones are really helpful. I put them on and it's better than Xanax. I have also noticed a problem with electromagnetic fields, mostly with my CPAP machine.
good luck.....

I'm pretty pro structure as a whole. With 3 little kids I think you almost have to be. Buti think I might take their most active point (walking through the door in the afternoon ) and tweak it to allow myself and them a cool off time. Maybe lay out play clothes and a snack before I pick them then when we get home they can have those while I sneak upstairs until the storm passes. One thing at a time.
Thanks for all your help :-)

Since apparently cages are frowned upon ;-)

Yes, they really tie our hands with all these rules about corporal punishment and confinement..LOL. I do think preparation is the key. It's definitely more difficult when you're having a bad day, but you can only do the best with what you have those days..especially if friends and family aren't readily available for some much needed respite. I do hope you find some things that work for you..everything is definitely trial and error with this disease, so it may take some time.

Good luck!
